The tournament was established in 2002 and was held on an annual basis featuring teams from England, Scotland and Wales and an invited team, on this occasion Gibraltar. The other, historically rich perennial play-off contenders suffering a dreadful start. Hull finished 3rd and were promoted to the Premier League after beating Watford in the play semi final, and Bristol City in the final. Preston finished 15th. Photos by Paul Thompson.

Leicester City (blue) taking on Queen's Park Rangers in a Coca-Cola Championship match at the Walkers Stadium, Leicester. It was Gary Megson's first game in charge of the home team since his appointment two days earlier. Hampden Park, Glasgow, home to Queen's Park and Scotland pictured prior to the amateur team's fixture against Alloa Athletic in a Scottish League second division match. The home team won by one goal to nil with a goal by Alan Trouten in the 88th minute. Queen's Park, founded in1867, are currently trying to become only the third FIFA Order of Merit club after Real Madrid and Sheffield FC. Photos by Colin McPherson.

40 imagesStoke City beat Bristol City 2-1 on their way to 2nd place in the Championship and promotion to the Premier League. Managed by Tony Pulis, their style of football wasn't to everyone's taste. Stoke stayed in the Premier League for 10 years before relegation in 2018. Bristol City finished 4th, and lost to play off final to Hull City.

The visitors won with a solitary sixth-minute goal by Jon Rowan in front of 388 spectators. Both Workington AFC and Boston United were members of the Football League, the Cumbrians losing League status in 1977 while the Lincolnshire club were relegated in 2007 and demoted two divisions for financial irregularities.
