The match had to be staged away from City's Farrar Road ground as it did not meet UEFA's stadium standards. The Finns won 1-0 in Wales to go through 3-0 on aggregate in front of 602 spectators in the first season of the newly-introduced competition which replaced the UEFA Cup. Photos by Colin McPherson.

Gary Neville was sent, and away fans caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. United won the triphy by beating Spurs, Manchester City, and Aston Villa, in the final. Barnsley finished 18th in the Championship.

Park Avenue finished the season 2nd in the Northern Premier League premier Division. They beat Harrogate in the 2nd Qualifying Round, before losing a 3rd Qualifying Round replay to Buxton. Bishop Auckland finished 13th in Northern League Division One.

31 imagesLeague Cup Semi Final Second Leg, Turf Moor. Trailing 1-4 from the first leg, Burnley won 3-0 to force extra time before conceding goals in the 118th and 120th minute. The match was played in a torrential downpour. Spurs lost the final 4-1 on penalties to Manchester United after 2 hours of goaless football.

Richmond were 0-2 down with 30 mins left. The game was played in pouring rain, and became very heated. Tranmere needed to win to leapfrog Scunthorpe, while a draw would do for the home team. Tranmere scored first, but Scunthorpe Captain Cliff Byrne equlaised with 2 minutes left. Scunthorpe beat MK Dons in the play off semi final, and Millwall in the final.
